Chaplaincy Program

Neerim District Secondary College has a Chaplain funded under the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program (NSCSWP) The National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program provides funding to schools to access the services of a school chaplain or student welfare worker.

This program aims to help school communities support the spiritual, social and emotional wellbeing of their students. Mr John van der Marel has been appointed as Chaplain and is employed through Youth for Christ Australia (YFCA) who are a registered agency for the program. John’s qualifications include a Diploma in Christian Studies, Diploma in Community Services in AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) and MH (Mental Health) and Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment as well as various qualifications and experience in Outdoor Recreation/Education.

The Chaplain is part of the Wellbeing team in the school and works closely with the Wellbeing Co-ordinator, School Nurse and School Principal.

Programs run by the Chaplain include:

  • One on one mentoring
  • Positive Choices Mentoring Program, including training volunteer community mentors
  • No Limits Program

The Chaplain also assists on wellbeing days (once each term), school camps, outdoor education and CEA 9 programs.

To support the chaplaincy in the school a chaplaincy committee meets once a month.

YFC Australia also has other programs and services that run from our Youth Centre in Warragul.

Students will be informed if the Chaplain is participating in any particular program and if any program has any spiritual/religious content.
